- Bromphenol blue is a synthetic sulfonephthalein dye, best known as a pH indicator that changes from yellow to blue as acidity falls. In cosmetic products it is used as an antimicrobial, to limit the growth of microorganisms, and as an antioxidant, to slow the breakdown of other ingredients by oxygen.
