- Thiosalicylic acid is a sulfur-containing derivative of salicylic acid, made synthetically rather than from a plant source. In cosmetics it is used to help preserve formulations by limiting oxidation, to encourage the shedding of surface skin cells, and as a reducing agent in certain chemical processes.
