- Sodium alum is a mineral salt of sodium and aluminium, related to the more familiar potassium alum. In cosmetics it is used as an antiperspirant, helping to reduce the amount of sweat reaching the skin's surface, and as an astringent, which causes a tightening effect on the skin.
