Pigment Red 83 is alizarin crimson, a red pigment made by binding alizarin (1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone), an anthraquinone compound, to a metal such as aluminium. This forms an insoluble coloured 'lake'. Alizarin was once taken from madder root but is now made synthetically.
