In brief: Microcrystalline wax is a wax derived from petroleum, made up of finer crystals than paraffin wax, giving it a more flexible, tacky texture. In cosmetics, it helps bind ingredients together, adds bulk, stabilises emulsions and controls the thickness of formulations such as balms and creams.
