The app
The SkinRx.help app and your data
The app collects nothing about you unless you choose to send it. Everything it does — search, decoding a label, reading a routine — happens on your device, from a copy of the reference that ships inside the app and is refreshed from skinrx.help when a newer version exists. There are no accounts and no adverts, no analytics or tracking of its own, and the app never asks to track you.
What the app sends, and when
- A data refresh. Each time the app is opened, and when you return to it after an hour or more away, it asks skinrx.help whether newer ingredient data exists and downloads the changes. The request carries the app's version number and the date of the data already on the device, and nothing about you.
- On Android, Google's usage figures. The camera scanner and the tip jar use Google's libraries, which send Google usage figures, never the photo or its words.
- A tip, only if you choose to leave one. Payment is handled entirely by Apple, through In-App Purchase (iPhone, iPad and Mac), or by Google Play (Android). The app and skinrx.help receive no details about you or your payment.
- An error report, only when you tap Send. The report carries the kind of problem you chose, what you wrote, the record it concerns, and — if you typed one — an email address. The email address is used only to reply about that report, and deleted when the report is closed. Reports also carry a short random code made once on your device, used only to apply the site's daily limit on reports; it is not a device identifier and cannot be linked to you.
- Unidentified ingredient names, and searches that found nothing, only if you turn the setting on. Help improve the dictionary is off unless you switch it on. When it is on and a label you paste or scan contains names the reference does not recognise, only those names are sent, so they can be added. Never the whole label, and only when at least a third of the label was identified. When it is on and a search finds nothing at all — no ingredient and no product — the words searched for are sent once you stop typing, so the missing ingredient or product can be added. Searches that find something are never sent. Both carry the same short random code as reports, used only for a daily limit; neither is stored against it.
To stop anyone flooding the reference with reports or names, skinrx.help also counts, for each day, how many arrive from each network address. The address itself is never kept: only a code made from it with a secret key, which cannot be turned back into the address, and each day’s counts are deleted after two days. The site's hosting keeps no logs of visits.
What the app keeps on your device
Your recent lookups and decodes, your routines, and your reports, in the app's own storage. Clearing recents in Settings removes the lookups and decodes; deleting the app removes everything.
The camera
The camera is used to read a barcode or to photograph an ingredients panel. Pictures are read on the device and are not stored or sent anywhere.
Product photographs
Where the catalogue holds a photograph of a product, the app fetches it from skinrevu.co when you open that product's record. That request is like any picture on a web page: no identifier travels with it, but skinrevu.co sees which photograph was asked for, and so which product was opened.
